What is the Crown Court?

The Crown Court is a senior court in England and Wales that handles serious criminal cases. While the Magistrates' Court deals with less severe offences, the Crown Court addresses indictable offences such as murder, rape, robbery, grievous bodily harm (GBH), and fraud. It is also responsible for either-way offences referred from the Magistrates’ Court, including those where the defendant has opted for a jury trial. The Crown Court has greater powers of sentencing than the Magistrates' Court and typically handles more complex and high-profile cases.

Trials in the Crown Court are conducted before a jury of 12 individuals and a judge, who oversees the legal proceedings and passes the sentence. The Crown Court can also handle appeals against decisions made by the Magistrates’ Court and conduct sentencing hearings where the defendant has been convicted in the Magistrates' Court but the offence requires a more severe sentence.
